Alii, this is Rondy Ronny with your weekend report for Friday January 16, 2009.
It was an extraordinary day at Ngerulmud on Thursday January 15th where the inauguration of the 8th president of the Republic of Palau was sworn in along with newly elected and re-elected officials. The weather was perfect during the swearing in ceremony but by afternoon the rain poured down hard on the capital; however, that did not stop the fan fair from continuing throughout the day. OTV covered the entire ceremony, as you might have seen already and will continue to air the momentous event throughout the week.
In other news, former President Mr. Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. vetoed the compensation bill just prior to the end of his term as president. The bill proposed a salary hike for executive officials. Former President Remengesau stated that there was no identified source of revenue for the increase and that it would contribute to the government's deficit. In addition he stressed that congress should take into consideration raising the salaries of teachers, nurses and public safety officers.
Also during the last days of his presidency, Senator Remengesau objected to Senator Diaz being selected as the chairman of the Credentials Committee in the Senate. He urged Senate President Mlib Tmetuchl to assign someone to judge qualifications who does not have a criminal record.and who is not a convicted felon. Senator Remengesau reiterated that our government should be transparent and that the citizens of Palau be fully informed. Senator Diaz was slammed with four different lawsuits in 2008 including a copyright infringement and three defamation actions. Another suit for unfair business practices is yet to be filed by Roll'em Productions. Senator Diaz also plead no contest and paid a fine for an assault last summer, which in fact was his assault conviction.
In other political news, the House of Delegates elected Delegate Noah Idechong as the House Speaker, Delegate Alexander Merep as Vice Speaker and Deglegate Gibson Kanai as Floor Leader. The Senate voted Senator Mlib Tmetuchl as the Senate President, Senator Kathy Kesolei as the Vice President and Senator Arnold Oilouch as the Senate Floor Leader.
