This week, the Bank of Canada’s Currency Museum began packing and moving things out in preparation for the Bank’s massive renovation.
Included in all of the history found in the currency museum is a two-ton Yap stone money. The famous stone money from the island of Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia was the centerpiece of the museum prior to its moving.
The stone money was loaded onto a truck and transported to the Canadian Museum of Nature storage facility in Quebec ahead of renovations.
The Bank after 40 years in its Ottawa head office is preparing to modernize and renovate the space beginning next year. It’s not clear when or how the stone money made it to Canada.
Early last month, the German National Bank Museum also displayed a Yap stone money as its centerpiece attracting large crowds.
