The Marshall Islands capital of Majuro was flooded this week forcing the airport and roads to temporarily close down. Supermoon high tides combined with local storm surges caused flooding around the Majuro area. Dozens of residents and government officials spend hours clearing debris, trash, and corals from roads and the airport runway. The event led the government to welcome a US emergency response team with the words ‘welcome to climate change’. Minister de Brum says the Marshallese people are suffering an escalating climate crisis from the current drought to flood. Local Majuro weather official says the country is not out of the woods just yet. Residents were alerted of additional floods this week and encouraged to take necessary precautions to protect their lives and property.
