A halfway house is being eyed for the Bureau of Public Safety as a way to segregate inmates and improve security at the Division of Corrections.
In an interview with OTV, ed Bureau of Public Safety Director Ismael Aguon disclosed that the Bureau is looking into constructing a halfway house this year.
One of the Bureau’s biggest challenges is separating high-risk inmates or more violent inmates from others in the Koror Jail.
Director Aguon says the facility has been in a poor state for decades and is not fit for the current profiles of inmates it houses.
The planned facility is aimed at housing short-term inmates or inmates with short term sentences, diagnosis inmates under the 6-to-6 program and those in rehabilitation programs.
Aguon further disclosed that the Bureau is shifting its focus towards the Koror jail this year to improve security.
Plans to upgrade the jail’s security features are set to begin as early as next week.
In the meantime, he hopes that something would be put in place soon for the construction of the halfway house to be stationed next to the fire station.
