An internal investigation has been launched into allegations that police officers have been accepting bribes from foreign workers in replacement of issuing citations.
On January 28, 2014, the Bureau of Public Safety announced that the internal investigation orchestrated by the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) would look into allegations that police officers particularly officers from the Division of Patrol are accepting bribes or have accepted bribes from foreign workers who may be in violation of Palau’s laws.
No one has reportedly been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
However CID is urging the public to assist with the investigation by providing information regarding similar incidents.
The CID office is asking anyone with information to come forth. People are encouraged to call and report similar incidents of bribes involving police officers to 488-2412 or call Chief of CID Richard Ngiratrang at 775-4667.
Those who wish to remain anonymous are asked to call crime stoppers at 488-8477 and leave a message.
