Legislation pending in the United States Congress is threatening Aquaculture farming industries in the Pacific as it proposes to ban certain species of corals and clams.
The Endangered Species Act on Coral, which is currently in public hearing, may impact farming industries significantly in terms of limitation on species.
“It will affect us by potentially limiting our ability to export corals to the U.S. market,” said Proven Crup, Manager of Marshall Islands Mariculture.
The Marshall Islands Mariculture has been in operation for 10 years farming corals and clams for U.S. and Asian markets, but with the U.S as their primary market, the company may lose significant amount of profit if the legislation is passed into law.
