The Palau Senate during its session on July 17 unanimously approved Reverend Billy Kuartei as the new Minister of State and Dr. Caleb Otto as Palau’s new United Nations Representative.
Kuartei is the current Chief Compact Negotiator for the Palau Compact review and previously served as President Remengesau’s Chief of Staff during his last term.
President Remengesau says Kuartei has been in some way taking over the responsibilities of the Minister of State.
During his press conference this week, he pointed out that there’s no conflict with the two positions Kuartei has been appointed.
During the same session, the Senate also unanimously approved Dr. Caleb Otto by acclamation or clapping as Palau’s new United Nations Representative.
President Remengesau nominated Dr. Otto in April to replace current Ambassador to the UN Stuart Beck.
Beck, who is based in New York, has been in the position for about 10 years.
Dr. Otto and Kuartei will officially assume their positions when they take their oath of office.
With Kuartei’s confirmation, the only remaining position vacant in the President’s cabinet is the Ministry of Education.
