Canvasback’s latest medical mission to the Marshall Islands has helped hundreds regain
their vision. The Marianas Variety reports that over 200 people, who were blind in one
or both eyes, benefitted from the two-week medical mission. The fourteen-member team
led by Canvasback’s co-founder Jacque Spence performed over 200 cataract and retinal
surgeries. Spence told the Variety that the biggest challenge for doctors and nurses were
that cataracts have affected patients for many years, making it difficult to treat. Despite
the challenges, Canvasback and its medical team successfully treated the patients with
assistance from various U.S. pharmaceutical companies. The team also performed two
successful corneal transplants using live corneal tissue. Following the successful mission,
this month, Canvasback is arraigning to bring in an ear, nose and throat specialist team to
further provide needed medical services to the Marshall Islands.
