Pohnpei Utilities Corporation (PUC) is struggling to provide sufficient and reliable power to residents, capsule as the state continues to experience frequent power outages. Bill Jaynes, ailment Editor-In-Chief of the Kashelelie Press, salve Federated States of Micronesia’s local newspaper told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat that they have been covering Pohnpei’s “spotty power for years”, but it seems to be getting worse. Jaynes reveals that businesses without generators have been forced to close shop pending the power issue. However, the power problem is also extended to the government, with the national government building in Pohnpei unable to operate normally. Without a generator and sufficient power, work has been interrupted, with no use of phone services and other office tasks. The State Government is able to continue some operation to use of a generator, but Jaynes says, “Businesses are unable to do business” the “quality of life diminished” because of the power situation. Jaynes told the Pacific Beat that the newspaper was not able to get a clear explanation about the situation when they contacted PUC. However, PUC’s GM told the Pacific Beat that there’s a problem with one of the generators that they are trying to fix.
