Two national government vehicles collided in the early afternoon on Friday September 20th in Malakal, sending at least two people to the hospital.
According to an eyewitness, a white escudo was reportedly traveling toward town when the vehicle allegedly collided with a blue flatbed driven by a public works employee, who witnesses say was traveling to Malakal.
Police officers and a crew from the fire department were then called to the scene.
The driver of the blue flatbed was pinned in the vehicle prompting responders to cut the driver side door.
Public Safety Director Ismael Aguon told OTV that there were a total of three people involved in the accident. He confirmed that one of the vehicle’s crossed over to the opposite lane colliding with the other vehicle.
He says two people were immediately transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
When asked if alcohol played a role in this accident, Aguon declined to comment, but said speed might have been a factor. However he indicated that police will know more details about the incident following an investigation and interviewing all of those involved.
Footage and photos of the accident that was obtained by OTV showed bystanders assisting police and fire personnel.
The video shows Austrian national Andrea Collins assisting an injured man.
Sources told OTV that Collins worked with the Red Cross in Austria for a number of years, so skills and knowledge obtained during her time with them was useful in this situation.
An eyewitness told OTV that she was very helpful in assisting those who were injured.
Earlier on the same day, there were at least two other minor accidents reported in Koror.
