An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, health also known as a drone, order demonstrated its abilities in the skies over Airai state on Monday September 30th.
Unmanned aerial vehicles have been the subject of some controversy around the world, raising questions about potential abuse of their abilities, but in a statement made to OTV after the demonstration, President Remengesau spoke about the potential use of a drone in enforcing marine sanctuary laws.
The President noted that the UAVs would give the nation the ability to locate ships fishing illegally in Palauan waters much faster than before, and to share that information instantly with law enforcement agencies, allowing them to respond rapidly.
President Remengesau explained that in the past, Palauan authorities would need to patrol around its large EZZ searching of vessels, but with this technology, UAV’s would scout Palau’s waters and send the information directly to local authorities.
Information gathered by the drones would also be used as evidence to prosecute illegal fishing operations.
The UAV’s is a key part of the President’s marine law enforcement strategy for the establishment of a marine sanctuary, which would ban all commercial fishing in the country’s 200 mile EZZ.
According to the president, the demonstration on Monday was made possible by funding from the Minderoo Foundation, created by Australian mining billionaire Andrew Forrest and his wife Nicola.
